It was a brilliant week for Bromsgrove Sporting’s U21s, who were keen to bounce back and deliver a big result.

The Rouslers bagged a thrilling home win against Pershore Town 88 Development, after winning a tense penalty shootout 5-4 in the First Round of the Worcestershire Football Association Saturday Cup.

In an energetic first half, Finley Carson’s powerful strike put Bromsgrove ahead before Pershore equalised, in what was a strong performance after the break.

The game remained tightly contested and was eventually taken to penalties. Players on both sides slotted some stunning penalties, including Finley Carson, Archie Thurston, Haydon Leek, George Gillon and Ollie Cunningham for Bromsgrove.

“The game started quickly and Pershore were straight out of the blocks putting us under pressure early on,” said joint manager Mark Reeve.

“Holding firm, we came into the game and moved the ball quickly to open Pershore up before Finley Carson’s fine strike saw us take the lead.

“Into penalties and we held our nerve to win the shootout, with Man of the Match Charlie McNamara making two saves to see us progress to the next round of the Cup.”

Joint manager Stuart Carson added: “Saturday’s game was a credit to local U21s development football, so well done to both sets of players.

“Having worked on a number of areas last week in training, the boys took it all on board and we were back to the levels we expect right from the start on Saturday.

“Cup games are a free hit and we played some good attacking football and maybe should have won the game in normal time.”

The team’s October fixtures were also announced this week with Sporting hosting three Midland League fixtures before playing Worcester AFC away in the WFA Saturday Cup at the end of the month.

“As they can, the draw for the next round has thrown us an interesting away fixture against AFC Worcester,” said Carson on his team’s next Saturday Cup match.

“Registered player James Rose is playing there which will allow him to pit his wits against our coach and his dad, Pete. We’re all really looking forward to that family day out.”

Looking ahead to their next game, Bromsgrove’s U21s face Boldmere St Michaels at home on Saturday 5th October at 10:30am.

“Onto this week, with more to work on before we entertain top of the league Boldmere, which we are all looking forward to,” Stuart said.

“A massive thanks also to all our volunteers and supporters so far this season.”
