It was a tough match and an action-packed second half last weekend, but opponents Stourbridge ended it on top with a 4-2 win against Bromsgrove Sporting’s U21s.
Both teams arrived at The UK Electrical Stadium looking for their third win, as Bromsgrove looked to chase down Stourbridge for third in the U21s Midland South Division.
The visitors started strong, playing fast and physically before seeing home a stunning strike to lead Bromsgrove.
Sporting’s U21s created plenty of chances and kept good possession, but couldn’t find the equaliser before halftime.
The home side came back out with a fiery intent as Haydon Leek whizzed the ball into the net with his first touch of the game before Man of the Match Archie Thurston charged forward to nail a quick-fire goal to ignite a sensational second-half comeback.
But the celebrations were short-lived after Stourbridge scored, which was immediately with them slotting in a penalty.
Tensions rose in the dying minutes, as Bo Morris received a contentious red card before Bromsgrove conceded a final goal to seal a Stourbridge win.
Mark Reeve, joint manager, commented: “A positive performance from the lads and unfortunate right at the end.
“I felt we were a little below par in the first half in particular, sat off a little and perhaps invited them on.
“In the second half, we started to open them up and grew in confidence, bringing them back to 1-1 with a cool finish from Haydon Leek, followed by a through ball to Archie Thurston to calmly slot it home past the keeper.
“There are some key moments to look over. Decision making and game management at important times of the match ultimately cost us the game.”
Saturday’s game also saw the use of the team’s brand new VEO video camera, which has been sponsored by ‘That Carpet Place Worcester’.
Fellow joint manager, Stuart Carson, said: “Many thanks to our new sponsor, That Carpet Place Worcester, for supporting the team,” said joint manager Stuart Carson.
“VEO will enhance our ability to review games and plan future sessions for areas of improvement.
“This also enables the lads to analyse their own performance, whether it’s a really positive contribution or an element of their game to work upon.”
Following the first team’s success in their FA Cup win against Belper Town, the U21s’ home match scheduled for this Saturday against Bedworth United U21s has been postponed.
As a result, the team’s next match will be next week on Saturday 21st September against Stourport Swifts U21s away.
