Bromsgrove Sporting’s U21s won 5-4, in an exhilarating evening match against Leicester Football & Education Academy last Wednesday.
The visiting Leicester unit kicked off the night with a stunning strike from outside the box, before a Bromsgrove free kick was knocked in off the head of Lewis Doyle to get the home side off the mark.
Leicester responded with another goal, only for Sporting’s George Gillon to slot home a penalty to draw level once again.
The home side smashed another into the back of the net via James Tierney, to end a frantic first half with a narrow 3-2 lead.
The entertainment continued throughout the second half, as Leicester quickly bagged another goal to come back level.
More end to end action followed with goals from Bromsgrove’s Harvey Flemming and another for the visitors keeping the tally and tempo ticking over.
But it was Bromsgrove’s Finley Carson, who was first to a rebounded shot and sent the ball into the bottom corner to take the lead one final time, ensuring Bromsgrove would win an utterly enthralling match.
“Wednesday evening saw us stretch our unbeaten run to four wins in the Challenge Bowl Competition,” said U21s joint-manager, Mark Reeve.
“It was a great effort from the squad to maintain second spot in the (Bowl) table and take two wins in five days across all competitions.“
“Fast and furious best sums up last week’s game,” summarised fellow U21s manager, Stuart Carson.
“Full credit to Leicester, who I think will upset a few teams at this level with their sheer work rate.
“Saying that, once the lads got hold of the game and took the lead, we managed the game well and I believe we were worthy winners.
“Massive thanks to everyone who came down to support the lads,” he added.
This Saturday, Bromsgrove’s U21s welcome Bedworth United U21s in the final league game of the season for both sides.
After months of trading places, both teams are tied in third place on 28 points each, with this result set to conclude the battle for third in the league.
It’s been a successful season for both teams, who share similar stats, with Bromsgrove boasting eight league wins, while Bedworth are just ahead on nine.
The last time these team’s clashed, Bromsgrove took a 1-3 victory on the road, in the team’s first official league game in August.
Now, the team’s come full circle to end their league campaigns as they started.
“Onto this week and our final league game of the season,” said Stuart Carson.
“Bedworth have been doing well judging by recent results and it will be a keenly fought contest.
“It would be great to get the crowd behind the lads once again.”
Bromsgrove currently lead Bedworth on goal difference and will boast the home advantage this weekend.
However, the similarity in these two team’s stats and their equal hunger for the last podium position are the ingredients for a hugely entertaining fixture, which looks too close to call.
