It has been a week of highs and lows for Bromsgrove Sporting’s U21s, with big developments in the team.

Action-wise, it was another quiet weekend for the team, after their match against Bedworth United U21s was cancelled.

A spell of bitter weather conditions caused the pitch to freeze over, forcing the Rouslers to call off their first home fixture since October.

However, there was no rest for U21s player Archie Thurston, who was called up for first-team duty this week.

The 18-year-old featured in Bromsgrove Sporting’s matchday squad for their 0-2 win against Bishop’s Stortford on Tuesday night.

To top off the evening, Thurston was subbed on in second half additional time to make his debut for the first-team.

“It was great to see another product of the U21’s make their first team debut on Tuesday,” said Bromsgrove Sporting’s Football Development Officer, Iain Queen.

“It is not always easy for young players to step up into the first team, knowing there is a good chance that they might not get any minutes, but credit to Archie for conducting himself professionally, and I was delighted that he was rewarded with his debut for the first team.

“Archie has a real eye for goal and has excellent movement in and around the box. He has missed a large part of the season through injury, however he is now fully fit and ready to get back on the goal hunt.”

Thurston and fellow U21s alumni, Bo Morris, signed first team forms in September before the two appeared on the bench for the first team in November’s 8-2 Worcestershire Senior Cup triumph over Pershore Town.

“Managing a group of teenagers can be a daunting task; however Mark Reeve, Stuart Carson and Pete Rose have created an environment within the U21’s where the players are playing for each other and the badge,” Queen continued.

“This is what development football is all about, no prima-donnas, just a group on friends who want to learn and better themselves, and I am proud that this is what has been created within the U21 dressing room.”

“Our pathway is thriving and I am excited to see what the future holds for our Bromsgrove Sporting community.”

In other news, the team have recently welcomed the talents of midfielder, James Tierney.

At just 18 years old, Tierney has a wealth of experience, joining the club from Halesowen Town, having also played for Droitwich Spa U21s and the Solihull Moors Foundation.

Next up, Sporting’s U21s will make the short trip to face Solihull Sporting U21s.

Despite Solihull playing 11 league games this season, they have yet to face Bromsgrove, with two scheduled clashes between the teams cancelled for various unforeseen circumstances.

Solihull are one from the bottom of the table, with six points, while Bromsgrove will hope to close the points gap to third in their long-awaited return to action.

“We are relishing the upcoming fixture this weekend,” said U21s joint manager, Mark Reeve.

“With a good focus this week on training, some work on fitness and transition in play will be the focus“ he said.

The team held a training session on Monday this week in addition to Wednesday’s regular slot, to maintain focus and fitness levels ahead of their first game of the New Year.

You can catch Bromsgrove Sporting’s U21s in action against Solihull Sporting U21s, at Tudor Grange Academy, on Saturday 18th January (10:30 KO).
