LADIES (UPDATE – GAME ON SUNDAY – 22/09 – is postponed)

  • The first home game of the season for the ladies was a derby encounter against Redditch. The atmosphere and electric football on show from both sides was really good – Redditch opened the scoring from a corner to go 1-0 up at the break. Sporting came out second half with the reaction that was asked for and Laura Shanley equalised with a well taken shot. Bromsgrove then created numerous chances late, with Elle Higgins-Pugsley hitting the bar and some good defending from Redditch keeping them at bay. Redditch had some chances too, but great defending and super saves from Rosie Parslow ensured the game would finish a draw, which was a fair result. Some great football played by both teams, in what was a superb advert for ladies football.

LADIES DEVELOPMENT

  • The Ladies Development Team is the final leg of the pyramid into the first team, with a mixture of experience and youth in the side. They are looking for a manager – contact Alan Williams on 07786 983 951 for more info.
  • It was Bromsgrove Sporting Dev v Evesham Ladies on Sunday and what an improvement! Having only 11 players available following injuries suffered last week, they were unsure what to expect. The ladies started well and were on the attack from the first minute, putting pressure on the Evesham defence. Our ladies were getting used to their positions, as it was only their second ever match. Players were playing in positions they have never played before and gave their all. Evesham did get on top in the last 15 mins of the first half but it was 0-0 at half time. There were only 10 players for the second half and the pressure was put on by the Evesham attack. Some great goalkeeping and resolute defending kept it goalless until Evesham scored with 20 minutes to go. The ladies continued to battle and got the equaliser. Shortly after, they were down to nine players and ultimately couldn’t hold out, losing 5-1 in the end, in what was a truly gutsy display from all the players.

VETERANS (UPDATE – GAME ON SUNDAY – 22/09 – is postponed)

  • The Vets had their first league game of the season at home to Hollyfields. Sporting started off brightly with some excellent football, with left back Leon Thomas playing a lovely one-two with new signing Josh McKenzie to open the scoring. Hollyfields battled well and a very rare mistake from keeper Neil Leach allowed the visitors to equalise. Sporting then began to dominate the game and missed two excellent chances, but a lovely through ball from Earl Jordan left Dan Ward one-on-one with the keeper and he slotted home to give Sporting the halftime lead, 2-1. Sporting started the second half strongly and created several superb chances but just couldn’t find the back of the net. The game should’ve been put to bed, but in typical football style, Hollyfields hung on and some poor defending allowed them to equalise. Fortunately, five minutes later, Sporting’s Earl Jordan finished off a lovely move and Sporting went 3-2 up. Sporting then continued to create some great chances but just couldn’t finish the game off and, in the last 10 minutes, Hollyfields threw caution to the wind and got their equaliser, with the game ending 3-3.
  • Although the game ended in a draw, there were lots of positives from the game. The MOTM was Leon Thomas, for an excellent goalscoring performance.
  • The Vets move onto Coleshill Town away this Sunday (10:30 KO).

GIRLS

  • Bromsgrove Sporting Girls U10 v Catshill Girls U10. It was the first game of the season against a strong Catshill team. The first half was difficult against a well organised Catshill team; with two girls making their debuts, they struggled to contain them, but the girls showed great strength and determination. It took a half time team reorganisation and pep talk to get the girls playing as well as they can and they were able to give Catshill a closer game, with all the players keeping the team shape and organisation. Their next game is vs Droitwich Spa Girls on Saturday.
  • Bromsgrove Sporting Girls U13 v Wolverley U13. After a long pre-season, the girls were eager to get started and they came flying out of the blocks, with a well-worked goal within the 1st minute. The first half continued in the same vain, with the Sporting girls dominating the ball, putting together some great passing moves and going into a four-goal lead at the break. The second half saw them continue to dominate, but they did tire a little and a flurry of substitutions ensured all girls got valuable game time, with the team finishing comfortable 5-0 winners. Overall, some great build-up play and solid defending, with a good spread of goalscorers too, which is pleasing. The coaches were impressed with the desire, commitment and quality shown today – off and running with smiles all round and three points on the board!
  • Bromsgrove Sporting Girls U18 v Leamington Girls U18. Our girls got off to a great start by scoring in the fourth minute through Persia converting a great corner by Ruby. It got better five minutes later, when Elle slotted home via a through ball by Erin. Bromsgrove were dominant throughout the first half but missed a few great chances to make it more until Amélie popped up and drove home the third in the 44th minute. Most people thought we would go in at half time 3-0 up but Leamington hoisted a long ball into the penalty and and got their first with the last kick before half time. The second half saw a changed Leamington team – they were unfortunately first to every ball and made numerous chances and deservedly got their second in the 56th minute. They continued to press but Bromsgrove’s defence held firm to the end. The difference in the two halves was staggering – Sporting had 10 shots in the first half, of which six were on target and three were scored, compared to only three shots in the second half, two on target. 3-2 and three points!
