The Pitching-In Southern League Premier Division Central, Saturday 28th January 2023, 3:00 p.m. kick-off

Redditch United 2 (1) Bromsgrove Sporting 0 (0) at the Trico Stadium

A disappointing day for Bromsgrove Sporting last Saturday as Redditch United completed a league double over their local rivals.

To rub salt into the wound, Sporting were the better side for most of the first half but an inability to finish and solid defending by the Reds meant that the Rouslers failed to hit the back of the net whilst their opponents scored with their only shot on target.

With Bromsgrove playing downhill from the kick-off and keeping the ball well in the Redditch half, opportunities were frequent but getting into good shooting positions was hard to come by. Brandon Smalley put a decent effort over the bar as early as the 8th minute then shortly after, Miro Pais went down in the box but despite appeals, referee Mr Fisk waved play on. Captain Tom Taylor, returning to the team after an injury also got in on the act with a good header on the 17th minute but that also went over.

With half-time looming, Bernard Mensah found himself with plenty of space in Redditch's midfield making a neat pass to Lewis Hudson just inside the Bromsgrove penalty area and his firm strike went into the top corner of Ollie Taylor's net giving his side an narrow lead at the interval.

Redditch came out for the second period with visibly more confidence but Sporting were still in there as Kartell Dawkins had a header cleared off the Redditch line. But the home team doubled their lead on the 55th minute when Ben Sheaf sent a cross in from the left; Ollie Taylor went to make what looked like an easy gather but Mensah just got there first turning the ball home.

Danny King could have put the match well beyond the Rouslers had his shot not been denied by the post midway through the half. But from then on Redditch defended in numbers keeping Sporting well out of harm's way. Ammar Dyer, Tom Taylor and former Red, Dan Sweeney had half-chances later on but it was not to be Bromsgrove's day.

After the match, player/manager Mike McGrath praised him team for their hard work in the first half but thought they lost a bit of momentum in the second.
