Sporting fielded a couple of new faces in centre-back Nicky Martin and former Fairfield goalkeeper Tom Savage, but their away form continues to dog them. With a cold wind blowing across a heavy pitch, the visitors shaded the first half and really could have gone in a least a couple up at the interval had they been just a little sharper in front of goal.

Chris Conway had a good effort blocked on 18 minutes then a minute later Kevin Banner saw his free-kick well saved by home 'keeper Craig Johnson. Robbie Hendy showed a few neat touches but just failed to get a tap-in on 25 minutes. Lichfield meanwhile were also busy. Their best chance came when the lively Mark Robinson evaded the off-side trap then as he tried the round the Sporting 'keeper, was brought down. Fortunately the visitors had a defender playing back so just a yellow card for Savage but it could easily have been an early bath.

The first few minutes of the second half carried on where the first had left off with the Bromsgrove outfit having no less than three shots blocked on the line but the breakthrough for the Staffordshire side came on the 62nd minute when Mark Robinson glanced in a corner.

Up to then Sporting had been moving the ball round well on a difficult pitch but the goal seemed to unsettle their rhythm. Seven minutes later, a poor pass was intercepted by Sam Buckle who hit the ball over the Sporting midfield to Mark Robinson and with no flag for off-side, slid it coolly past the advancing 'keeper for their second.

The experienced Sean Westley expertly marshalled the Lichfield defence to prevent any incursions with his team relying on quick breaks; they could have had another couple had it not been for the woodwork.

Sporting in fairness did work hard and got a deserved goal with the last kick of the game when substitute Bradley Williamson connected with a cross that went in off the post.

So more away-day disappointment for the Worcestershire side who again will rue several missed opportunities in the first 45 minutes.
