REMEMBERING SIMON DEAKIN

We are sorry to report the tragic passing of Simon Deakin, on 8th January 2025, aged just 44. The son of Lynn and Athol Deakin and brother to Fleur, Joel and Jimmy, he also sadly leaves behind his beautiful son, Luca James Deakin.

Simon was a plumber/pipe fitter by trade and a business owner and, in his youth, he was a keen footballer, playing for a number of teams including Bromsgrove Town Boys Youth Team, Bromsgrove 94 Youth Team, Kidderminster Harriers FC, Aston Villa Youth Team, Bromsgrove Rovers (youth & reserves), Fairfield Villa, Turks Head, Garringtons and the Queens Head Dons.

He had many passions in life, but none bigger than his passion for carp fishing. His infectious enthusiasm touched many in the fishing community and Simon joined many fishing trips with his friends. He had a personal best of a 59lb mirror carp in Mar Peche, France and closer to home, at the Tardebigge Reservoir, catching “The Big Common” at 37lb.

When he wasn’t fishing, he loved nothing more than watching his son Luca follow in his footsteps, playing football for Bromsgrove Sporting FC under 10s and Academy Kicks FC Dolphins Under 10s.

Simon will be sorely missed by his family, friends and amongst the Bromsgrove Community.

A number of his family and friends will at the UK Electrical Stadium on Saturday, when a one-minute applause will take to remember him before the kick-off.

RIP Simon.

OPPOSITION

  • This season: P24 W9 D8 L7. 35 points. GD 0. They sit 10th (of 22 teams).
  • This season (away): P13 W4 D4 L5. 16 points. GD -5.
  • Last five league games: W3 D1 L1
  • Last five league away games: W2 D1 L2
  • Most recent match: 1-0 home win versus Stratford (4th January)
  • Most recent away match: 1-1 draw at Royston (New Year’s Day)
  • With eight draws in the league this season, only bottom placed Biggleswade (9) have drawn more than Leiston this season. They have only drawn one of their last 10 league matches – that being the aforementioned Royston game.
  • They are currently the only team in the league with a level goal difference (34 scored and conceded).
  • With 11 goals in their last five league matches, only Spalding (12) have scored more across the same period; this stat was largely thanks to Leiston beating Lowestoft 7-2 at home on Boxing Day.
  • In their 13 away league games this season, they have only kept one clean sheet (Barwell, 21st Sept, 0-0). That means it is nine away league games in a row without keeping a clean sheet.
  • Their two other away draws in the league season have been Hitchin (15th Oct, 1-1) and Halesowen (7th Sept, 1-1).
  • In a spell across October and November, the Blues enjoyed a seven match unbeaten run (W4 D3). Another seven match unbeaten run (also W4 D3) came across August and September, which included progression through two rounds of the FA Cup.
  • However, that August/September spell was directly preceded by a four match winless run (D2 L2) – their first four matches of the league season.
  • Top scorer this season (as per Southern League website): Jamar Loza (10 goals – this includes a hat trick in the aforementioned win over Lowestoft).
  • As previously mentioned, Leiston enjoyed a decent FA Cup run this campaign, getting through three rounds before losing at home to National League Dagenham & Redbridge in the Fourth Qualifying Round. They exited the FA Trophy in their first match in this season’s competition.
