Bromsgrove Sporting’s U21s have made a flying start to their Challenge Bowl campaign, with a 0-3 victory over Walsall Wood U21s.

Both sides grappled for possession in a closely contested first half before Sporting benefitted from a Walsall own goal to take a narrow lead into the break.

The second half began as tightly contested as the first, before Archie Thurston led Bromsgrove to a breakthrough by winning the ball and storming forward to slot home a one on one with the Walsall keeper.

Newcomer Fin Horrocks slotted Sporting’s third with a fiercely struck effort.

Strong individual performances and good teamwork frustrated Walsall, who ended the day goalless, while Bromsgrove walked away with their first win of the competition.

“It’s always good to start the new Bowl with a win,” said U21s joint-manager, Stuart Carson.

“With players coming back from injury and illness, full credit to the boys for getting another win on the road.

“It was good for Archie to get another good goal and for Fin Horrocks, who makes it two in two games.

“I still don’t think we have got the pre-Christmas momentum back but we aren’t far off it.

“With plenty of games coming up and a full squad, we look forward to the challenges over the next few months.”

This weekend, Bromsgrove’s U21s continue their Challenge Bowl campaign with a visit to Bilston Town U21s.

The Black Country side boast an impressive track record, with seven wins and two draws across all competitions since November.

Like Sporting, Bilston have won their only Bowl game so far, when they beat Leicester Football & Education Academy U21s 1-2 last month.

The MFL U21 North Division team are currently second in the table with 36 points, two points behind North Division league leaders Brocton U21s.

Bromsgrove’s U21s are still third in the U21 South Division on 25 points, with a three game win streak across both League and Bowl matches.

“Another tough away game this weekend against Bilston Town and one we look forward to,” said Carson.

Bromsgrove Sporting U21s will face Bilston Town U21s on Saturday 8th March at Bilston Town Football Club, kicking off at 10:30AM.
