After two postponed matches in as many weeks, it was third time’s a charm as Bromsgrove Sporting U21s returned to action at the weekend with a 1-1 draw against Boldmere St Michael’s U21s.
A competitive first half ended with Bo Morris knocking in a bullet header from a corner kick to see the visitors snatch the lead before the break.
Despite injuries and absences, the Rouslers continued to create chances in the second half and held onto the lead until Boldmere smashed home a header in the 92nd minute to narrowly clinch the draw.
“The lads competed really well against a strong Boldmere St Michael’s side, taking a one-nil lead into half-time,” said joint manager Mark Reeve.
“We were unlucky not to go further ahead in the second half, with a shot from Harvey Flemming crashing against the crossbar.
“The last minute of the game saw Boldmere equalise, with the game ending all square, but all credit to the team for competing and setting their standards.“
“Following a two-week break we expected a tough fixture and that’s exactly what we got,” commented fellow joint manager, Stuart Carson.
“It wasn’t a pretty game, but you have to dig in at times and I thought we were much better in the second half”.
The U21s’ captain, Ollie Cunningham, suffered an injured MCL during Saturday’s match and will be joining keeper Charlie McNamara on the sidelines, who is also recovering from an injury.
“All our best wishes go to our skipper, who sustained a bad injury after landing awkwardly – no fault of any challenge,” said Carson.
“He will be back but will be a massive support on the sidelines for the team and coaches in the meantime. Also best wishes to Charlie Mac on his recovery. It will be quiet for a few weeks!”
The weekend also saw Sporting’s U21s keeper, Tom Garbett, make his full debut for the team against Boldmere.
The 16-year-old has been part of the team since July, attending training sessions and waiting for his opportunity to play on a matchday.
“Congratulations to Tom on making his full debut for us. We thought he was excellent between the sticks” added Stuart.
Next up, Bromsgrove will continue their run away games when they face Coventry United U21s on Saturday 7th December at the Massey Ferguson Sports Ground (10:30am KO).
