Bromsgrove Sporting’s U21s returned with a bang after their dominant 9-2 away victory against AFC Worcester Firsts, in their second round match of the WFA Saturday Cup.
The impressive away win marked AFC Worcester’s first home defeat of the season.
The visiting Bromsgrove side made the first move early, on with a fifth minute strike from Josh Burgess kickstarting Sporting’s tally.
Man of The Match George Gillon slotted a penalty and a clean strike in quick succession before the home side scored to get off the mark, sparking hopes of a comeback.
But these dreams were quickly shattered by Harvey Flemming and Ewan Carter, who added themselves to the scoresheet to complete a convincing 5-1 lead at half time.
Bromsgrove’s momentum continued into the second half with Brendan Field, Gillon, Haydon Leek and Flemming all adding to the goal frenzy before Worcester managed to find the back of the net in the final seconds of a commanding afternoon for Sporting.
“Sometimes you don’t know what to expect when playing open age teams in the cups but you do know you will be in for a tough game,” said U21s joint manager Stuart Carson.
“With this in mind, how you prepare is important and, following a good session last week, I thought we started brighter than we have all season.
“Doing the right things and playing with pace brought its rewards and, overall, I thought the lads played some fantastic stuff and managing the game well eased us through to the next round.”
“I thought we started really well on the front foot, and took the game to an unbeaten AFC Worcester Firsts,” said fellow U21s joint manager, Mark Reeve.
“It’s great to be in the next round and credit to the lads for an excellent team performance, in what ended up being a convincing win.”
Fixtures for the next month were announced this week and the team are preparing for a long spell on the road.
November is set to serve up five away games in the Midland’s Football League U21 Southern Division, kicking off with Stourport Swifts U21s this weekend.
“We get back to the league this Saturday, away versus Stourport Swifts. We will aim to pick up from last week’s WFA Cup tie and look to come away with a positive result,” said Mark Reeve.
Bromsgrove Sporting U21s will face Stourport Swifts U21s on Saturday (10:30 KO) at Stourport High School and Sixth Form College.
