An adrenaline fuelled week of action saw Bromsgrove Sporting U21s’ season officially come to an end – but it wasn’t without excitement.
The team saw their way through to the semi-finals of the Challenge Bowl competition after an efficient 0-3 win against Coventry United U21s.
The match began well contested, with neither side finding the back of the net in the first half.
But a double from George Gillon, and a scintillating finish from Zak Parr, booked Bromsgrove a place in the next round.
Having lost to Stourbridge in every encounter this season, Bromsgrove were expecting a high-octane clash against the Glassboys and this match didn’t disappoint.
The two sides locked horns in an intense first half, with shots galore, but neither team were able to take the lead, setting the scene for an electrifying second half.
Stourbridge emerged from the break in top form, and mercilessly took a three goal lead in almost no time at all.Â
But Bromsgrove battled on, with Sporting Man of the Match Archie Thurston finishing a monumental team effort to get the visitors off the mark.
The South Division winners danced around Bromsgrove’s defence once more to give them another goal, before a tenacious Sporting score with a well taken free kick from Thurston – a consolatory goal to end their Bowl journey with a 2-4 defeat.
Under 21s joint-manager, Mark Reeve, said: “Both team’s started brightly and we were unlucky not to go into half time leading.
“From the restart, Stourbridge raced through unchallenged and slotted home, before a quick and unfortunate second deflected goal.
“We clawed back two goals but was too late for the comeback.
“Lessons to learn on missed chances, but credit to the lads for a big effort throughout the game.
“Congratulations to Stourbridge for making it an all Southern Division final against Bedworth United.”
With the season now over, the U21s will hold an awards night this Saturday to celebrate their successes.Â
The team are still looking for sponsors to contribute whatever they can towards the cost of awards and venue hire.Â
