The Southern League Premier Division Central - Saturday 26th March 2022, 3:00 p.m. kick-off
Peterborough Sports 2 (2) Bromsgrove Sporting 2 (0) at The Bee Arena
Not the easiest of places to get a result and Sporting looked to be beyond contention at half-time after two well-taken goals by the hosts but a sterling second half saw The Rouslers gain a hard-earned point.
Just one change to the line-up from the team that beat Barwell last Saturday; Michael McGrath replacing the injured Charlie Wise, though Tom Taylor dropped into the back three with McGrath in central midfield.
Much of the play was in the centre of the park for the early exchanges though the visitors had two good efforts when Tom Taylor headed over the bar on the second minute and a Jamie Molyneux header was cleared off the line, 11 minutes later.
Sports though swung the match decisively in their direction on the 18th minute when Lamine Kaba Sherif crossed from the right to Josh McCammon who then half-volleyed home a brilliant shot from just outside the penalty area, giving Sporting 'keeper Ollie Taylor no chance.
Four minutes later, The Turbines doubled their lead when their opponents conceded a free-kick just outside the box. Luke Warner-Eley took the kick floating it over the wall and into the bottom corner of the net just past Ollie Taylor's outstretched left arm.
Soon after, Josh Dugmore for Sporting had a low shot saved by Peter Crook whilst at the other end Sherif volleyed an effort over the bar. On 32 minutes, Warner-Eley had another chance with a free-kick but this time, Ollie Taylor made a low save. Just before half time Sports had another good chance to extend their lead but striker Mark Jones blasted over the bar.
After the interval, Sporting's first chance of the half came on 56 minutes but Tom Taylor headed over the bar. However with another 6 minutes on the clock, the match moved in The Rouslers direction with a counter-attack when Josh Dugmore sent a great pass up the right flank to Callum Ebanks who used his pace to get past the Sports back-line and to get to the ball just before the advancing Crook then touch it enough to go in the right direction and amble over the Peterborough line from 20 yards out.
Substitute Josh Moreman should have restored the Turbines' lead on 68 minutes with his first touch but unluckily for him, his shot bounced off the right-hand post.
From then on the game became rather scrappy with Mr Dix awarding a number of free-kicks that broke up the flow of the play but the free-kick that mattered came with just two minutes of normal time left and it was that man again, Josh Quaynor playing his 150th match for Sporting who curled a delightful shot over the Peterborough wall into the bottom left-hand corner of Crook's net from 30 yards out.
Sports thought they may have had a penalty two minutes into added time when Will Shorrock looked to have handled but Mr Dix waved play on much to the relief of the small number of travelling away fans.
And so the scoreline remained with Sporting picking up a valuable and probably unexpected point against a useful outfit.
After the final whistle, manager Gavin Hurren said "I am really proud of the lads this evening. They all worked hard, played well as a team and got a deserved result".
