The Worcestershire Senior Invitation Cup, Tuesday 10th January 2023, 7:45 p.m. kick-off
Bromsgrove Sporting 1 (0) Evesham United 2 (2) at the Victoria Ground
It was a wet and windswept Tuesday evening as Sporting took on Evesham United in the Worcestershire Senior Cup at The Victoria Ground.
Playing down hill, the Rouslers started brighter with Dan Sweeney going close in the first minute but it was Evesham who took the lead eight minutes later with Jeff Putz getting behind the home defence, sending 'keeper Ollie Taylor the wrong way and slotting home from 15 yards out.
The Robins then doubled their lead on the 23rd minute; this time is was Adam Mace who got the final touch.
From then onwards Sporting had the majority of possession, a succession of corners and free-kicks but wayward shooting and solid defending by their opponents prevented any change to the score and so it remained until half-time.
For the second period, there was a new rule for the competition which allowed for up to five substitutions and Sporting took full advantage using all available in the first 15 minutes of the half. However the Evesham defence remained resolute until the 61st minute when Mike McGrath was fouled in the penalty area. Away 'keeper, Edward Brearley guessed correctly diving to his left but the ever-reliable Dan Sweeney converted with a shot low into the bottom right hand corner just beyond the stopper's reach.
The game then continued as before with Sporting having plenty of chances including one McGrath headed against against the crossbar and another couple of penalty appeals but it was one of those night's when the ball would not cross the goal line and so the score remained at full-time with Evesham justly celebrating a deserved and probably unexpected victory.
