Bromsgrove Sporting ended Bury Town’s 100% start to the season on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of a scintillating second half display.
Despite only scoring one goal – via the head of Ollie Harrison – the Rouslers had a hatful of chances in the second half, as they extended their winning run to five matches across all competitions, along with their fourth consecutive clean sheet.
A delighted Bromsgrove manager Tim Flowers commented on the performance after the interval: “It was a really good second half from us. I’d like to think that those that came to watch us enjoyed it and were impressed.
“It was open, fast and fluent football, right from the back, through midfield and our end product was terrific.”
The first half wasn’t overly full of chances; Jamie McGrath had a third minute chance saved by Sporting stopper Tony Breeden, with the visitors the better the team in the early exchanges.
Sporting had some efforts late in the half, with Billy Shaw and Lamin Barrow both having shots – the latter’s a volley that went narrowly over the bar.
A rampant second half display from Sporting started with the game’s only goal – a Chris Hussey free kick was headed into the bottom corner by imposing centre back Harrison.
Barrow and Jamille Matt had chances saved in quick succession in the 56th minute, before Shaw had a shot saved and Brad Bood clattered the crossbar with a curled strike.
The 71st minute saw Dan Trickett-Smith have a shot from a free kick routine saved by keeper Charlie Beckwith, with Matt having an attempt dramatically cleared off the line moments later.
A rare second half chance for Bury came in the 75th minute, as a header was put over from a cracking cross.
More last ditch defending from Cole Skuse’s men saw Hussey and Barrow have shots kept out, before Matt had another shot dramatically cleared off the line with four minutes of normal time remaining. It wasn’t to matter though, as Flowers’ side bagged all three points and moved level in the table with their opponents.
Reflecting on the defeat, Skuse said: “It was a real game of two halves. It’s a tough one to take but we’ll look at the positives. They’re a really good side, who will be up there at the end of the season, but we’ll bounce back from this and roll into the next game.”
