This article about our U21s side, from Matt Tennant, reflects on last weekend’s emphatic home win and this Saturday’s away fixture…
Bromsgrove Sporting U21s stormed to victory with a dominant 6-1 win over Stourport Swifts U21.
The Rouslers started on the backfoot after Stourport were first to get off the mark, following a fine individual effort to go a goal up.
However, this was to be Stourport’s only time leading the game, as Alemi Obey-GM put his side level less than five minutes later to ignite the momentum for Bromsgrove.
The home side held the game at 1-1 before Harvey Flemming stepped up to score his first goal of the season and give Bromsgrove the lead into half time.
From then on, there was no respite for Stourport against a rampant Bromsgrove, who scored four goals in under 20 minutes.
Working the ball well and smashing through Stourport’s defence, Bromsgrove commanded the second half, with Man of the Match Alemi Obey-GM scoring back to back goals for a well-deserved hat trick, before Zak Parr and Jack Cooke also got in on the action with a goal each.
Stourport played on, determined to claw something back, but they were unable to respond to Bromsgrove’s goal-scoring onslaught, as the home side comfortably notched up a statement victory.
The result sees Bromsgrove climb another place to eighth in the league table, on 21 points.
“Taking all the positives, I thought we started really well and could have been a couple up against a well organised Swifts side,” said joint U21s manager, Stuart Carson.
“Following our late defeat last week, it’s how you respond which is important.
“Through persistence, we went into the break in the lead. It was great to see Harvey Flemming get a deserved first of the season and the message was to keep going and step on in the second half.
“I thought the lads were superb in the second half, winning duals and playing with composure.
“On reflection, this sort of result has been coming, and it was good to see the lads’ hard work in training pay off, as everyone in the squad played their part.
“Full credit to Swifts, who kept going and never stopped working. Overall, a pleasing day and we look forward to pushing on over the next few weeks,” Carson finished.
This match also saw young talent Oliver Edrop make his first appearance for Bromsgrove Sporting U21s, with his performance impressing the management.
“Well done to young Ollie on his debut,” said Carson.
“He stepped in to show his quality on the ball, and we’re excited for more to come from him as he grows into U21s football.”
This week, Bromsgrove Sporting U21 hit the road to face Mercia Athletic U21s.
The central-Birmingham based team are currently 17th in the table on seven points, alongside Stafford Rangers U21s and Redditch United U21s.
Since September, when the team won their only two league games and secured a draw against Bedworth United U21s, Mercia have struggled.
The team’s clean sheet County Cup win against Punjab United Sports in November remains their last victory of the season.
Faced also with numerous game cancellations due to adverse weather conditons like many other teams, developing momentum has been difficult for Mercia Athletic.
Bromsgrove, on the other hand, have enjoyed a brilliant resurgence, winning five of their last six league games to skyrocket up the table.
Will Bromsgrove continue from last weekend’s win to gain another, or can Mercia Athletic break their losing cycle to climb ahead of Stafford and Redditch?
All will be revealed on Saturday 7th February, when Bromsgrove Sporting U21s play Mercia Athletic U21s at The Pavilion (10:30 KO).
