FIRST TEAM

The First Team made it back-to-back wins on Saturday, as they beat Hitchin Town at Top Field 2-1, despite playing the second half with ten men. Keanu Cooper gave Bromsgrove the initial lead, before Nathan Blissett scored what proved to be the winner from the penalty spot.

There’s no game for the First Team this weekend; they are next in action on Saturday 9th March, at home to Berkhamsted.

LADIES

Sunday 25th February: Bromsgrove Sporting Ladies vs Kidderminster United Ladies.

Sporting looked to push on in the quest to claim the league title against a free-scoring Kidderminster side. The game started at a high pace, with Sporting giving their opposition no time on the ball. Bromsgrove came close to opening the scoring on two minutes, when a shot from Beth Breen was followed in by Sophie Taylor, who somehow couldn’t manage to find the back of the net, to the disbelief of the supporters.

Sporting were then disappointed as Kidderminster’s Eloise Russell jinked past 3/4 Sporting defenders and put the ball past the goalkeeper to open the scoring. After going behind, Sporting didn’t let their heads drop and continued to play some excellent football.

Their pressure paid off in the 15th minute, with Breen finishing off an excellent piece of attacking football. This was quickly followed by a second; this time by Taylor latching onto a long through-ball from Amy Kendall before striking the ball into the bottom-left corner. Sporting kept on forcing mistakes for Kidderminster, and a quick-fire brace from Kate Bonser saw Sporting race into a deserved 4-1 lead within 25 minutes. The first was a well-hit shot into the bottom-right corner and the second was a composed finish after following in a cross from Breen at the back post.

Half Time: Bromsgrove 4 – 1 Kidderminster

Sporting went into the second half expecting a fast start from the visitors. Composed play allowed Sporting to set the tempo and create three early chances, only to be stopped by blocks on the line. The early pressure paid off, when a chipped ball by Laura Shanley got Taylor through on goal, who expertly lofted the ball over the advancing keeper on 48 minutes.

Four minutes later, Shanley was on the scoresheet herself, tapping in a low-driven cross from Vicky Grady. In the 63rd minute, ex-Sporting striker Lauren Allcoat bundled in a cross to make it 6-2. On 73 minutes, Ellie Nash joined in on the scoring, when a reverse pass from Breen put her through before striking the ball into the top left corner. Three minutes later, the scoring was wrapped up, when Nash’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper and followed in by Breen.

FULL TIME: Bromsgrove 8 – 2 Kidderminster

Goalscorers: Beth Breen, Kate Bonser, Sophie Taylor (all x2), Ellie Nash & Laura Shanley Player of the match: Vicky Grady.

An excellent result for the Ladies sees them keep pace with Malvern Town, with a game in hand. Sporting have a week off this week and return to action on Sunday 10th March, against Wyre Forest at the VG.

GIRLS

Under 9s: A very spirited performance by the U9 girls against Kidderminster, after a last minute venue change due to the weather

With very little prep, they started slow but grew into the game. There was a very strong second half performance, with some lovely passing moves. They created chances and matched Kidderminster player for player.

It was a great debut by Sophie, who settled in like she had been with us from the start. She was the best player, so also scooped the Player of the Match award.

Both Under 18 games were postponed – hopefully they can get games on this weekend.
