LADIES

Sunday 28th January – Bromsgrove Sporting Ladies vs Inberrow Eagles

This week, the Ladies turned their attention back to the league after last week’s cup exit. Sporting started very brightly, and could have been ahead within the first minute, but were denied by the post after Beth Breen shot from a narrow angle.

Sporting were dominant throughout the first half, having lots of possession without really threatening the Inkberrow goalkeeper. It was clear from the start that Inkberrow came to frustrate Sporting and try to pinch a goal on the break. This nearly paid off half way through the half, when they caught Sporting on a counter attack, but their shot was brilliantly pushed away by goalkeeper Rosie Parslow.

Half-Time – Sporting 0 – 0 Inkberrow

At the break, Sporting made a couple of changes to try and break the deadlock. Starting brightly, Sporting created a few early chances and played some very good, high intensity football.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute, when a free-kick from Amy Kendall found the head of Breen, who diverted the ball into the far corner. Breen was on the scoresheet again in the 75th minute, when she cut inside the defender and curled a fantastic shot into the far corner.

Two minutes later, Amy Kendall fired a brilliant dipping free-kick into the corner from 30 yards out. The scoring was rounded off in the 85th minute, when Charlotte Wallis battled her way through a number of challenges and slid the ball past the goalkeeper.

Final Score – Sporting 4 – 0 Inkberrow.

Opposition player of the match: Beth Breen

VETERANS

Sunday’s game at the Victoria Ground was always going to be a tough one with Bromsgrove entertaining league title challengers Coundon Old Boys. The game started off balanced with both sides negating each other’s attacks, but 20 minutes in and Coundon showed their teeth with a well worked goal giving them the lead. Coundon then had much of the play but Sporting’s back four remained resolute and the first half ended with Coundon one up.

The second half started and Coundon continued to play some very good football. Sporting fought hard, but the pressure was to much and 20 minutes into the second half, Coundon scored again. This seamed to give Sporting a kick up the backside and with a good spell of football, Dale Volrath scored to pull one back for Sporting.

The game was then quite tight and, with 10 minutes to go, Sporting then changed formation to go on the attack in search of an equaliser. Unfortunately, this backfired and Coundon scored twice in the last five minutes to give them a 4-1 win. A special mention goes to Leon Thomas and Dave Baggley, who ran their socks off for 90 minutes and to Jermaine Clarke who had to try and feed off scraps up front but worked tirelessly for the entirety of the game and gets the MOTM for his performance.

GIRLS

Bromsgrove Sporting Girls Under 9s v Kidderminster Lions Girls

A hard game with half the squad missing through illness. After a competitive first half when the opposition got on top, our girls came out for the second half and were the better team, scoring five goals, with Grace getting a hat-trick. They all tried to do what they are doing in training and their closing down of opponents was second to none.

Performance of the match went to Olivia, who played her best match yet. Fantastic team spirit, supporting each other when things were tough during the first half.

Bromsgrove Sporting Girls Under 18MW 2 – 0 Coton Green (away)

During the first half Bromsgrove maintained most possession of the ball and managed to capitalise by scoring the initial goal. Bromsgrove had a dozen more chances to score however the oppositions keeper played well. During the first half, Bromsgrove failed with a few chances but remained strong.

Bromsgrove continued to put pressure on the opposition’s defence and a mistake resulted in a penalty, which Bromsgrove scored. With Bromsgrove controlling the game, they created more chances and finished the game victorious. Next up, they are away to Worcester City .

Bromsgrove Sporting Girls Under 18TL 0 – 1 Coventry Sphinx (home)

A highly confident second in the table Coventry Sphinx visited on Saturday. Bromsgrove began the game on fire, passing and moving well and we’re unlucky not to take the lead, restricting Coventry to the occasional fast paced break. However, from one of these breaks, Coventry got the only goal of the game The girls’ heads did not drop and they continued to dominate but to no avail.

The second half story was much the same as the first; the Bromsgrove defence stood firm and they continued to press forward for the equaliser – however, the Coventry defence repelled all attempts on their goal.

Bromsgrove, despite the loss, should be proud of their efforts. Next up, they are at Boldmere St. Michael’s .

The Bromsgrove Sporting Girls are starting to look at next year’s teams and would like to invite players to consider playing next season. If interested, contact Alan Williams on 07786 983 951.
