OPPOSITION

  • Grimsby Town are top of the National League, with 26 points from 11 games (W8 D2 L1). The National League is two levels above Sporting’s league.
  • The Mariners have won three games in a row (Dover 6-0 H, Altrincham 2-3 A, Woking 0-1 A).
  • The games where they didn’t pick up all three points this season have all been away from home. Stockport (0-0), Maidenhead (1-1), Bromley (3-1).
  • Their away record this season is P6 W3 D2 L1. They are five wins from five at home.
  • As a National League team, this is Grimsby Town’s first Emirates FA Cup game of the season. Before this season, they had spent five seasons in the Football League.
  • The last time they had to go through the Fourth Qualifying Round was in the 2015/16 season. That season, they reached the Second Round Proper, getting knocked out to Shrewsbury Town via a replay. In the Fourth Qualifying Round that year, they beat Harrogate Town (Step 6, one level lower) 4-1 away from home.
  • Grimsby reached the FA Cup Third Round Proper in the 2018/19 season (then in League 2), before losing 1-0 at Premier League Crystal Palace.
  • Ryan Taylor and John McAtee are Grimsby’s top scorers this season, with five goals each. The top scorer in the National League has nine goals, but no team has scored more than the Mariners in the league this season.

If you are coming to the game, get behind the lads and make the VG a fortress – your support is a massive boost and we will need it against the team who are top of the National League! It couldn’t have been any tougher! So this clearly won’t be easy – so be loud, represent us with pride and support us from minute zero! Thank you so much for your support!
