Bromsgrove Sporting U21 sailed to a 1-3 victory against Coventry United U21 last weekend, to cement their spot in the league’s top eight.
Following a week off for Easter, the Rouslers travelled to the Butts Park Arena and started well, but found themselves frustrated by a tricky Coventry defence for much of the first half, with a missed penalty adding to their woes.
Their perseverance paid off though, when Jack Cooke scored the breakthrough goal with a brilliant finish to give Sporting a narrow lead at the break.
The second half saw much more aggression early on from Bromsgrove, who went on the offensive early on to create more chances.
This came together for a climactic finish, when Brendan Field curled in a quality ball to score direct from a corner kick, extending Sporting’s lead in incredible style.
Alemi GM soon caried the momentum forward to smash in a sharp finish, allowing the visitors to pull away 0-3.
It didn’t stay smooth for long, as Coventry responded two minutes later with a quick goal to keep Bromsgrove alert.
But a Coventry comeback proved too tall an order – putting in the hard yards early on paid off for Bromsgrove, who made it five consecutive League wins.
Bromsgrove Sporting U21 joint-manager, Stuart Carson, said: “On a good surface, we started well and played some good stuff. Our open play was everything we had been working on over recent weeks, but we lacked the final touch for me.
“Even though we missed a penalty, it seemed to drive us on, and we took the lead through good pressure and a fine finish from Cookie.
“The half time message was to keep playing and improve our delivery from wide areas. Fair play to the lads – there was a good goal straight from a corner from Bren’s quality and then a fine cross and finish from Alemi.
“Disappointed with the Coventry goal, although it was possibly offside. The whole squad contributed once again, with the lads off the bench giving us more energy in the later stages of the game to finish strong once again.
“Coventry will turn teams over, as they always have, and we wish them all the best – they are a good club and have a good management team,” he finished.
This week, Bromsgrove welcome Stourbridge U21 at home, for a critical end of season clash.
Stourbridge have enjoyed a strong season, winning nine games, and are one spot ahead of Bromsgrove in seventh – with the two teams separated by one point.
Despite their current top eight position, it’s a fair way off Stourbridge’s dominant campaign last season, which saw them top of the South Division table on 41 points.
For Bromsgrove, this is a chance at redemption, after The Glassboys beat them 4-2 in their final game of last season and 4-1 in a league clash months before.
“Into this week and our last home game against Stourbridge, which is always a tight fixture,” said Stuart Carson.
“We will prepare well and look forward to our last home game, before we visit Sutton next week, who are flying at the moment.”
Sporting’s U21 have never beaten Stourbridge U21, but with the team on a strong league charge, can Bromsgrove finally come out victorious?
