Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club was established in 2009 by former directors and supporters of Bromsgrove Rovers following the financial collapse of the town’s long-established club. With Bromsgrove facing the prospect of being left without senior non-league football, Sporting was created to ensure that football would continue to thrive in the town.
From the outset, the club adopted a unique ownership model designed to safeguard its future. No individual is permitted to own more than 10% of the club, ensuring that control can never rest in the hands of a single person. The Bromsgrove Sporting Supporters Trust also holds a stake in the club and appoints three directors, reflecting the club’s commitment to community ownership and supporter involvement.
Although granted the tenancy of the historic Victoria Ground, the stadium required extensive work before football could return. As a result, Sporting began life at Studley FC’s Beehive Ground while the Victoria Ground was restored to playing condition.
Sporting played their first-ever fixture, a pre-season friendly against Stratford Town, in July 2010 before embarking on their inaugural Midland Combination Division Two campaign.
After months of hard work to prepare the Victoria Ground, the club finally returned home on 6 November 2010. A crowd of 458 witnessed an unforgettable occasion as Sporting defeated Greenhill 7-0, marking the beginning of a new chapter for football in Bromsgrove.
The early years saw the club steadily climb the non-league pyramid, despite several managerial changes. Promotion to the Midland Combination Premier Division was secured following a strong 2011/12 campaign, while the club also reached its first senior cup final.
The following seasons laid the foundations for future achievements. Sporting consistently challenged at the top end of the Midland Football League, while the club’s reserve and youth teams also enjoyed success, winning league titles and county honours.
The 2013/14 season brought the club’s first senior silverware with victory in the Smedley Crooke Memorial Challenge Cup, while Sporting also made their debut in the FA Vase.
Under the management of Paul Smith, the club continued to grow. Sporting reached successive runners-up finishes before lifting the Midland Football League Division One League Cup in 2014/15 and establishing themselves as one of the strongest sides in the division.
The 2016/17 season remains one of the greatest in the club’s history.
Sporting stormed to the Midland Football League Division One title with an incredible 104 points, finishing 19 points clear of their nearest rivals and completing the entire league campaign unbeaten. The club also reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase, narrowly losing 2-1 on aggregate to Cleethorpes Town.
Support for the club continued to grow throughout the season, with several crowds exceeding 1,000 spectators. A record attendance of 3,349 packed the Victoria Ground for the FA Vase semi-final, demonstrating the remarkable connection between the club and the local community.
The Worcestershire Senior Urn was also added to the trophy cabinet, capping a truly historic campaign.
Promotion to the Midland Football League Premier Division in 2017/18 proved to be only the beginning.
Despite a managerial change during the season, Brendan Kelly guided Sporting to another league title, securing back-to-back championships while retaining the Worcestershire Senior Urn.
The momentum continued into 2018/19 as Sporting adapted superbly to life at Step 4. A dramatic 4-3 extra-time victory over Corby Town in the Southern League Division One Central Play-Off Final secured a remarkable third consecutive promotion and a place in the Southern League Premier Division Central at Step 3 of the National League System.
The club’s first season at Step 3 was brought to an abrupt halt when the 2019/20 campaign was declared null and void as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The following season was similarly disrupted, delaying the opportunity to build on Sporting’s rapid rise through the divisions.
In the years that followed, the club’s focus shifted from promotion to establishing itself as a competitive Step 3 side. While league campaigns brought challenges, Bromsgrove Sporting successfully retained its place in the Southern League Premier Division, continuing to compete against some of the strongest clubs in non-league football.
Thomas Baillie took charge ahead of the 2022/23 season before club captain Michael McGrath assumed the role of player-manager later in the campaign.
In January 2024, former England international Tim Flowers was appointed interim First Team Manager and successfully guided the club to safety.
Club legend Paul Smith returned ahead of the 2024/25 season before Scott Adey Linforth was appointed First Team Manager midway through the campaign. Under his leadership, Sporting secured their Step 3 status while recording the club’s highest-ever league finish and points tally at that level.
Today, Bromsgrove Sporting continues to build on the foundations established in 2009. With a passionate fanbase, a thriving community ethos and the historic Victoria Ground at its heart, the club remains committed to progressing both on and off the pitch while proudly representing the town of Bromsgrove.
