COACHES’ CORNER: Bren Kelly previews Nuneaton Borough

Ahead of Saturday’s league visit to Nuneaton Borough, manager Bren Kelly has previewed the fixture, pulling no punches in his demands for a much improved performance following our Hitchin Town defeat last weekend.

“Away to Nuneaton is always a tough fixture – they have good support and it’s a difficult place to get a positive result.

“They will be a wounded animal following last weeks defeat, but the same will apply to us.

“Last week was extremely disappointing, so we had a friendly Tuesday at Boldmere St. Michaels to try get it out of our system.

“Going forward we were okay, but defensively I wasn’t pleased, so maybe we are at a bit of a crossroads with the squad as to whether we can sustain a promotion push?

“Yes, we are overachieving, but we are where we are on merit and I want to maintain that form.

“Our home form is poor and I would expect to win a lot more at the VG.

“To the fans that ‘didn’t get’ the team selection last week, we had injuries to Mikey Taylor, Jak Hickman and Kieren Westwood, so sometimes things are forced upon us.

“This week, we have no Mikey (Taylor) or Jak (Hickman) again. Westy (Westwood) is 50/50 and Shaq (McDonald) is doubtful also.

“That said, the squad was better than what it showed last week, but it has forced me into actively trying to recruit some new blood.

“I want to win games of football and I can’t have players that just turn it on and off like a tap.

“I’m not saying they purposely play bad, but we carried far too many players last week and they are now playing for their futures at the club.

“Nothing personal – it’s just football.

“So it’s back to basics to try get a good result.”
