This week’s Wednesday Words sees first team coach Kev Barry reflect on what has been, safe to say, an up and down last couple of games, as well as preparations for this Saturday’s visit to Kempston Rovers.
“Well that’s been a bizarre few days as I am sure we would all agree.
“I will touch on what was an amazing Saturday for all involved with the club and really did show how far this great football club has come over the last year.
“A seven goal thriller against the form team in the league, topped off with a last minute winner from one of our young stars, Will Shorrock.
“I am sure games like that will keep bringing the fans down the VG… however the management and the lads are fully aware that if we are to be challengers come the end of the season, we MUST defend better, as we may need to pick up a few 1-0 wins along the way!
“We went from one extreme to the other when we faced Worcester City last night – Brendan made a few changes and the expectation, as always, is that nothing with regards to our playing style changes.
“It’s what we work on regularly and the players know the drill. However for the first 45 minutes we were totally outworked.
“I say it all the time to the lads – ‘you have to earn the right to play football’ – hard work and desire is a gimme. Well for 45 minutes that wasn’t evident.
“The second half was marginally better but, in all fairness, the game was lost in the first half.
“Hats off to Worcester though, as I am sure their management team should feel rightly proud of their lads this morning.
“We move on as always and put that result, and more importantly the performance firmly behind us.
“We have a great group of lads who had an off day – it happens! Its football!
“Knowing the boys as I do, they will be disappointed in themselves and feel they have let our fantastic fans down.
“They will make it up to you very soon – Kempston on Saturday gives the boys the opportunity to get us back on track.
“They are top lads and players, so keep sticking with them.”
