THE PLAYER LOWDOWN: Pykett talks Oz, Sporting, football future + surfing

This feature sees us catch up with former Rousler John Pykett, who is now living and plying his trade in Australia. He talked about his football Down Under, while reminiscing about his great memories with Sporting.

“Hello Sporting fans! I hope you are all well and staying safe in this difficult time. I am thoroughly enjoying my time in Australia; my partner and I have been living and working in a coastal town called Torquay,” John said.

John, who played his last game for Sporting on 28th September 2019, at home to Needham Market, made 102 appearance for the Rouslers. He is now looking forward to getting going in Australia.

“I’ve finally started my football season after four months of pre-season training and finding the right club. I have signed for North Geelong Warriors in the Victorian National Premier League Division Two,” he said.

“The club has an amazing setup with great facilities and ambitions… just like Sporting! We have been training four times a week since December, so we are all raring to go!”

The winger, famed for his acrobatic celebrations, talked about the things he enjoys the most about living in Australia, starting with something we could all imagine would be high on his list!

“Definitely the weather! And the fact there is always something to do. We have just started taking up surfing lessons! My days off are mostly spent at the beach, as we live two minutes away from it (sorry to rub it in!).”

John was a pivotal member of Sporting’s squad throughout the last few seasons, being a part of some great occasions with the club.

“After three promotions in three and a half seasons, I have many great memories at the club and can’t pinpoint just one. A few include a great day out when winning promotion at Loughborough University in 2018 and scoring on that day, coming on at half time against Worcester City and coming back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 in front of 1,600-ish fans on Boxing Day 2017, scoring against Corby Town in our 2-1 win at the VG last season and getting my 100th appearance.”

“I do miss playing in front of a full Shed End and the VG match day atmosphere cannot be beaten!”
