THE PLAYER LOWDOWN: Bedford talks Sporting, great VG memories + family

This feature sees us catch up with the first player to reach 100 appearances for Sporting, goalkeeper Jake Bedford. He talked about his days with Sporting, the great memories he has and his life after playing for the Rouslers.

“Hello Sporting family! It’s been a while since my time with the Rouslers; since then, the club has gone on to achieve some unbelievable things, which I had no doubt about you guys doing!” Jake said.

Not only was Jake the first player to make a century of appearances for Sporting, but he is currently the only goalkeeper to have gotten to this milestone.

“I really miss my time playing for the club and I have very special memories of winning cup finals and having the best games I could in a Sporting shirt.

“I’ve played at a lot of different clubs, some lower standard and some higher, but I can be completely honest and say by far my favourite moment in football is playing in front of you guys at the VG.

“I’ve got some good friends who watch Sporting and chat about it now and again and I always ask about what’s happening, as well as keeping a close eye on the results.

Jake, who won back to back Supporters Player of the Year awards with Sporting and also scooped Midlands Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2014/15 season, talked about how football ultimately went onto the backburner after leaving the Victoria Ground.

“During the last three years, I haven’t been playing due to my workload and, also, I lost interest in playing about 12 months after leaving Sporting.

“I now have a wife and a beautiful son, Frankie, who is only seven weeks old and, hopefully, he will ask his daddy to become a goalkeeper one day!

“I hope you and your families are all well and safe during this awful time and I promise to come down to see some old friends when we can, where I will continue cheering the Sporting lads on!”
