Bromsgrove Sporting got off to winning ways in the inaugural Red Recruitment Cup, courtesy of 3-1 win over Redditch United in a feisty encounter.
Josh Quaynor gave Sporting the lead 13 minutes in, before a Dan Sweeney penalty levelled proceedings with nine minutes of the half remaining.
However, a Jason Cowley brace in the final moments ensured the home side would claim the spoils, in a match where both teams ended the game with 10 men.
The first chance of the match went to Redditch’s Tiago Nassunculo, who had a shot saved by the legs of keeper Max Beardmore from close range.
Two minutes later, the deadlock was broken, as a decent bit of work out wide from winger Miro Pais teed up Quaynor in the box, who placed the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot.
Nassunculo had two massive headed chances afterwards, the first being a back post effort from two yards from a Sweeney cross that he somehow guided wide and the second which he sent over the bar via a free kick.
The equaliser came 36 minutes in; Sporting’s Tom Taylor was sent off for an off the ball altercation with Sweeney inside the area, after the two were involved in a challenge. Sweeney took the resultant spotkick and coolly slotted the ball into the top corner.
Sweeney and substitute Thomas Hillman both had opportunities in the first half of the second 45, but could only direct them straight at Beardmore.
Branden Horton was given his marching orders 15 minutes from time for what appeared to be dissent towards a match official, which was followed by the Rouslers sealing the win.
Firstly, a Quaynor corner was pounced on by Cowley who struck home in the 88th minute before the Sporting frontman doubled his tally deep into injury time.
He charged down and blocked a kick from goalkeeper Kieran Boucher, which ricocheted onto the crossbar; after a tenacious run, he managed to control the rebound and subsequently slot the ball into the bottom corner, ensuring Sporting would make it a successful start to the Red Recruitment Cup.
