COACHES’ CORNER: Bren Kelly previews Corby

Manager Bren Kelly looks ahead to our Buildbase FA Trophy tie versus Corby Town, talking about the occasion, the opponents, our squad and a rallying call for the fans.

====================================

“It’s our debut in this particular competition and it’s fantastic to be a part of it – it’s a very prestigious cup, with lots of established clubs in it.

“As we well know, we are minnows in this cup, as we sit at the lowest step possible. However, we believe the game is more than winnable, against our league rivals Corby.

“Corby have had a very strong start to their season and are without question the favourites for the tie, having already experienced life at step four and previously played in this cup.

“This week, we have been working hard in training as always, in an attempt to prepare us as best as we can for the tie.

“We have had two clean sheets on the bounce and we will be looking to try and continue that. The defensive side of the team was certainly an area I wanted to improve since I took over and I think we are making positive strides in that respect – not just as a goalkeeper and a back four but as a unit.

“The players have bought into it and are trying to implement it as best as they can on the pitch. Last week, we drew a blank away to Aylesbury FC; however a clean sheet and a point away from home isn’t such a bad thing.

“As I have said before, we have entered the unknown but we have had a pleasing start so far.

“The squad has been tested slightly over the past week, with Jason Cowley still banned, Jack Cresswell away getting hitched, Danny Jackman’s ankle injury and Cameron Peters only just coming back last Saturday.

“I recalled young Tom Massey to the squad after an impressive spell at Bilston, where he was well looked after by Scott Hamilton. Tom Taylor is not far away from game time either and Tom Rankin is due back shortly from the USA. Then Liam Spink is getting minutes elsewhere – the squad will be refreshed at a good time for us.

“Reece Francis is also getting game time at Lye Town after turning down Redditch Utd – I must add Reece’s attitude has been incredible and I have no doubt when he gets his chance he will be ready.

“The squad is really up for this one as they are every week – hopefully we can continue showing a decent brand of football and send you all home happy.

“So strap in folks and get ready for what I’m sure will be an exciting game – as always we will do our best to get a positive result for our Sporting faithful. Get that Shed End rocking!”
